Daisy Jones & the Six: from TV to OOTD

When Daisy Jones & the Six hit shelves in spring of 2019, it immediately topped my list of books to read. Set in the ‘70s, this Fleetwood Mac-inspired, documentary-style story follows the rise and fall of a rock band—and inadvertently touts all the makings for the kind of tale you can’t put down.

Four years later (nearly to the day), the title premiered as a miniseries on Prime, and within hours it clinched the #1 spot on Amazon’s Top 10 list. With a star-studded cast led by Riley Keough (a powerhouse vocalist and a Presley through and through), and a full-length album, Aurora, released by Atlantic Records in tandem with the show’s debut, this fictional, titular band truly became a real-time sensation. Even our queen Stevie Nicks is a fan!

Beyond the making of the album, the marketing efforts employed aim to actualize the band through collaborations with Levi’s, Clairol, and, my personal favorite, the behemoth of boho fashion, Free People. Enter: an exclusive capsule collection curated with flare jeans, whimsical kimonos and dusters, free-flowing slip dresses, embroidered blouses, and embellished statement pieces. FP has made this era of fashion its signature, so much so that when tasked with costume design for the show, Denise Wingate said via an interview with Byrdie: "I immediately thought of Free People when I started the show […] I knew there would be great styles I could incorporate that would have the exact flavor and feel I needed for the period. I've been a fan of the brand for so long, so this all seemed like the absolute best fit."

In my own life I’ve found style inspiration often strikes when I’m immersed in a movie or television series set in a different time period, so seeing this collaboration come to life is a job well done in my book. Now please excuse me while I fill my cart with Daisy-esque essentials and effectively decimate what’s left of my weekly budget.
